The year is coming to an end, and what a year we have had! We have had so much fun together; learning, laughing, exploring, creating and growing.

I would like to say a big thank you to all of 1S, who have been superstars all year. You have worked very hard, looked after one another, and have brought a smile to my face every day. I will miss each and every one of you.

I would like to say thank you to all of our parent helpers, who assist in so many ways to make it possible for us to learn and grow together.

Please come and say hello next year. Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

The Hour of Code

This week, students and teachers across the school will participate in an international learning campaign, The Hour of Code.

“The Hour of Code is a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify code and show that anybody can learn the basics. Every student should have the opportunity to learn computer science. It helps nurture problem-solving skills, logic and creativity. By starting early, students will have a foundation for success in any 21st-century career path.”

Students will be coding and creating games such as Minecraft and Angry Birds, by following the link below:

Making Recycled Paper

Last week, we made our own recycled paper using old newspaper! It helped us to understand more about what recycling means and how old or disused things can be useful. We sprinkled flower seeds onto our recycled paper so that our paper can be planted and watered, and grow flowers! Who knew making paper could be so much fun?!

First we teared up the old newspaper

We let it soak in warm water for a few hours until it became a mushy pulp

We used a frame to catch the fibres and let the water drain away

This was a fun part of the process!

We sped up the drying and flattened the pulp with sponges

We added some glitter to make our paper sparkle!

We also added some flower seeds so our paper can be used to grow flowers

Recycled Creations

As we are venturing closer to the end of our topic of investigation ‘Our Natural Environment’, we are now starting to think about the impact that humans have on the environment, and how we can help to conserve and protect it. There are many things that we can do, such as Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.

Excursion to Healesville Sanctuary

Last week the Year 1s and 2s went exploring around Healesville Sanctuary. We saw some endangered animals, such as the Tasmanian Devil and the Pygmy Possum, and some of us even had the chance to pat and feed a Brush-tailed Rock Wallaby! The children enjoyed a bird show, ‘Spirits of the Sky’, where they got to see some powerful birds, like the Wedge-tailed Eagle, fly right above their heads!

We had a wonderful day full of learning and we got to think about how to conserve our precious environments. Have a look at some photos of our day below (click the photos to enlarge).

Last week we delved deep into a natural environment – the rainforest. We discovered many interesting things about the climate, the animals and plants.

Our Natural Environment – Week 1 and 2

This term we are learning about the topic ‘Our Natural Environment’. We began our investigations with a KWHL chart. This was to show what we already Know about the topic, what we Want to know, and How we want to learn it. At the end of our topic we will brainstorm what we have Learnt.

We discovered that there are many things we know about our natural environment, but that we also have many questions. We will endeavour to find the answers these questions throughout the term. (Click on the photos for a close up)

We then defined an environment as ‘a place and its surroundings’ and we discovered that there are indoor environments too!

We also used Padlet to see what we knew about different kinds of environments and how to look after the environment. We will visit our Padlet wall later this term to see how our thinking has changed!

The first natural environment we investigated was the desert. We learnt about the climate, animals, plants and other interesting things that can be found in the desert, such as oases and mirages. Take a look at our drawings, labels and artwork about deserts:

Welcome back everyone! I hope you all had happy and relaxing holidays.

I had lovely holidays spending time with family and friends, having picnics, camping, bike-riding, trying out new recipes, going out for dinner and enjoying the lovely weather!

Father’s Day

1S designed some wonderfully creative artworks to give to their dads on Father’s Day. We also created some ‘Pig the Pug’ inspired Father’s Day cards. We hope all the families had a wonderful day celebrating.
